Colonial Life's History

75 Years of Industry Expertise

In 1937, Edwin F. Averyt and J. Clifton Judy started Mutual Accident Company in Columbia, South Carolina and sold their first product – accidental death coverage. Their first sales team was comprised of mostly local women. They could relate to the struggles others were going through and talk with them about their financial protection needs.

In 1939, the company became Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company. The mission then was the same as it is today – to help America’s workers preserve and protect the vitally important things they work so hard to build.

We’ve continued to evolve over the years:
  • In 1955, we introduced worksite marketing of voluntary benefits through payroll deduction, and that first payroll deduction account remains a Colonial Life customer to this day.
  • In the 1970s, we implemented computer technology long before most companies did.
  • In the 1980s, we began marketing our products through Section 125 and introduced electronic enrollment capabilities nationwide.
  • In the 2000s, we created our online enrollment system. Today, we continue to add innovative enrollment technologies and options.

After 75 years of business, we remain dedicated to our mission of finding ways to help America’s workers when they face unexpected events and challenging times.

Broker partners share some of their favorite things about working with us.

"As a fifteen year insurance veteran and District Manager for Colonial Life, I have one purpose...provide support for Brokers and Business decision makers who want to hear honest solutions and not just a sales pitch.

I am dedicated to strategies that are in the best interest you and your clients, and I am always searching for creative ways to do just that.

My background includes growing from agent to agency, being a  business owner himself, and managing multi million dollar operations. I understand the challenges of providing benefits while maintaining a profitable bottom line, and as a father of five, I also understand the needs of individual families who are seeking to protect their families and financial futures.

There is never a fee for consultations and as a Colonial District Manager, I can assist you with more than just a voluntary benefit product. I can help you position yourself as a Broker with cost saving strategies along with enrollment and education solutions.

Take a moment to fill out the form on the "Contact Us" page and give me a time and date when it would be convenient for me to contact you. It would be my pleasure to meet with you and discuss how Colonial Life can assist you with your clients."
